PowerPoint

Introduction:
The following video says it all about how PowerPoint can become pointless when conveying messages. However, Power Point can be an effective tool to use in the classroom to present information visually.
Examples:
- Candy Cane Starfish- 2nd graders researched an ocean animal put that info into a PowerPoint and presented to the class. The PowerPoint includes a quiz about the material.
- The Vietnam War – 7th graders picked a topic in U.S. History that related to the quote “Freedom is not Free.”
Things to Consider:
- If students are going to use a template, how is that going to be distributed? It could be put in a general folder on the server as a template or a copy could be placed in each student’s folder on the server.
- Currently, the student machines still have PowerPoint 2003 which looks dramatically different that PowerPoint 2007 which is on newly rolled out CWS machines. (6-2-09)
- The intro movie talks much about the features of PowerPoint that are overused or not used well. The following links provide tips about creating presentations.
- Particle Tree – Features links to several articles about making effective PowerPoint presentations.
- Presentation Zen- Blog dedicated to effective PowerPoint and alternative approaches to making engaging presentations.
- Patrick Crispen -Presents research summarizing what factors help students retain information that it taught through PowerPoint presentations. Using this research, the author offers advice about how to make content more memorable.
Getting Started/Steps:
To Start from Scratch -
To Discover Animation-
The following PowerPoint shows an example of some extreme animation and a few slides demonstrating how a little animation can go a long way.
Animation Overview (can’t be viewed from a student machine)
- To practice animating, download this Practice Animation PowerPoint. (.ppt) which already has pictures, text and objects or use one your have already created.
- Here are directions (.pdf) about animating objects, text, etc…in a slideshow. When you are finished practicing, try creating your own interactive PowerPoint or slide.
